General investment accounts

A General Investment Account is a direct holding of Stocks & Shares, Unit Trusts, Open Ended Investment Companies (OEICs), or Investment Trusts to name a few.  However, unlike ISAs, these are subject to Income Tax on any ‘income’ generated by the portfolio, even if reinvested, and Capital Gains Tax (CGT) on any realised profits.  Most investors are granted an annual CGT allowance each tax-year, which could reduce any potential liability.

For investors with greater than the annual ISA allowance to invest, a General Investment Account represents a suitable vehicle in which your capital can be invested and then used to fund future ISA allowances.
